North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site
The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway
Until the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was completed in 1914, remote canneries such as NPC could only be accessed by boat. North Pacific Cannery was tasked with moving some of its residences to make way for the tracks, but benefitted immensely from doing so. The cannery owes part of its success to its proximity to the railway, which provided an alternate method for exporting product and importing supplies and labour.
