North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site is seeking a full time Visitor Centre Assistant who is a friendly, hard-working mature individual with superior customer services skills and a retails sales background. He/she will work with the General Manager to oversee the entire operational functions of the onsite Visitor Centre/Gift Shop. He/she will help gather visitor statistics for the 2018 season. He/she will also track gift shop merchandise, do weekly inventories, restocking, and do display management. This individual will have had experience in retail and understand Point of Sale systems, reporting documents and statistics. He/she will liaise with other site services (Café, Tours and Maintenance) to ensure all visitors have a memorable experience while visiting the site in addition to supporting special events and programming happening on the site.
The Visitor Centre Assistant will report directly to the General Manager. They will be mentored through daily contact, supervision, hands on training and performance feedback. Customer service training will be conducted at the beginning of the season, as well as ongoing team building, problem solving and conflict resolution.
Orientation will include an extensive tour of the heritage site, where the candidate will be briefed on the North Pacific Cannery’s history, past programs, events, strategic goals and interpretation goals. As part of the orientation process, employees will be required to read and understand the Employee Handbook which specifically outlines the policy and procedures of the organization. This includes a comprehensive health and safety, as well as an emergency plan.
The candidate will have experience in Canadian History, Museum, Business Administration, Retail Management, or relevant field. The ideal candidate will have some museum or business administration experience, with an interest in remote communities and regional arts and heritage. The candidate should have strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience coordinating and collaborating with a range of different people. The successful candidate will possess superior organizational and problem solving skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively and adapt to new situations as the season evolves. He/she will be have excellent customer service skills, and retail sales experience will be considered an asset.

North Pacific Cannery is located in pristine wilderness surroundings on the Skeena River in the town of Port Edward, located 20 km south of Prince Rupert with a population of approximately 500. Prince Rupert is a port city with a population of 12,000 and serves as the land, air, and water transportation hub of BC’s north coast. The region is characterized by temperate rainforest, resource-based industry, and cultural diversity.

North Pacific Cannery, National Historic Site preserves, exhibits and interprets the history of the West Coast Salmon Fishing Industry, celebrating its role in the economic and cultural development of the province. The site is integral to a local, regional, and national identity, is significant as one of the few intact salmon canneries that remain on the west coast of North America, and continues to be relevant as a tourist destination and community hub today.
NPC aims to be: a collective memory for the industrial fishery on the Skeena River and British Columbia; a cultural hub for the community, attracting the local population for arts and sports events; and a key driver of economic transformation in the development of a sustainable tourism industry for the region.
